Direct TV revisited

We did the same thing back in mid October. Saved money and got better channels. Getting use to the remote took a little time but even it is better and more capable.

Had basically the same problem when we tried to change our service location from Oregon to Yuma AZ. Directv has got to have the worst customer service in the world. They will tell you anything and promise to call back when the problem is solved. Of course they never do.I talked to 16 different Directv reps before they finally sent someone out to change out our receiver and dish antenna. Everything is working fine now but I can no longer receive Directv in the motorhome. Will most likely cancel when we get back on the road this summer.

I am not sure of the accuracy of the OPs post. I have a KVH M3 satellite dish on my boat that can only receive SD channels. I am using a h-24 receiver. I just walked out to the boat and am still receiving all of the channels I normally get.

"Error Code 722: Service Expired
If you see this message, your DIRECTV receiver may not have the programming information for the channel you’re trying to view.

To get your channels back, reset your receiver:

Unplug your receiver’s power cord from the electrical outlet, wait 15 seconds, and plug it back in.
Press the Power button on the front panel of your receiver. Wait for your receiver to reboot.


If you still see the error message, call 888.388.4249 for assistance."

Dead receiver perhaps?

Receiver disconnected or unplugged for too long perhaps?

If unplugged too long the receiver can get too far behind on software updates or lose authorization..

Not able to get authorization perhaps?

Dish misaligned?

Latest software issue perhaps?

Seen a post from 2019 that mentions a software update caused that error and a reboot/refresh and rehit fixed it.. SEE HERE

Check alignment and LNB signals?

OP may also need to reboot and refresh several times after verifying they are getting good LNB signal..

I have Direct TV in the house and we get tons of SD channels.

We purchased the $100 dish on a tripod, and simply take the tuner from the house when we camp and everything has worked great.

I thought an update may clear up some things.

I have a King Dome satellite antenna on the roof of the RV I am using a DTV D-12 receiver and this situation applies to me, that why I asked the question about SD reception.

I have spent a lot of time with many representatives of DTV to no avail with two exceptions, yesterday and today. All the reps have stated that the DNS is dead and that SD is on its way out. Yesterday the rep was able to activate the H24, I had on hand, but it did not receive many channels and there were issues with the guide. Today after posting my question here I did call back to DTV and had the H24 disconnected and the D12 reactivated. Well I got back my channels but no DNS or any networks; I am not sure why the other reps were unable to reactivate the receiver.
Funny that after being told that SD was gone on the 1st of Feb I am getting SD again. ??? Just an FYI the last two reps were more helpful than all the others prior, I guess 13 to 15 reps and about 4 hours of chat and phone. The last two sounded like they were on the farm in Kansas.

I made a call to WInegard and asked if there portable sat dishes that worked with DTV were still working and they said as far as they know. missnmountains post about his KVH M3 still working confirms Winegards statement albeit the KVH is a different brand. All this said I assume that the Portable Dishes that work with DTV still work but differently than what I have, a King Dome or an 18 inch dish and an old receiver (12 years).
As stated above the DTV reps statement that SD was going, I am wondering how that will work with the portable antenna makers that are still selling the dishes to work with DTV SD in the future.

Answer is clear, you have old equipment.

DTV is trying to pull the life support plug on old equipment.

DTV has been threatening to turn off the old equipment support for quite some time, many deadlines have come and gone and yet it is still working, BUT..

Eventually ALL of the old equipment will go dark and become doorstops.

As far as portable dishes, well they too will become unusable unless the manufacturer of those dishes offer an upgrade to that old portable dish.. Some may, some may not, cost of research, development to retrofit the old portables just may not be cost effective solution.

Much of this has to do with older SD only equipment not being able to decode the newer video compression versions. The newer versions are more compact and efficient allowing DTV to pack more channels OR find other uses that may make more money for the extra bandwidth available.

Newer receivers and compatible portable dishes that are HD and SD compatible with the newer video compression will be in your future..

Eventually..

You simply cannot expect someone to support old legacy equipment forever, many custom parts go obsolete making old stuff impossible to keep building or supporting..

Thank You for the reply you are correct about the old equipment and I do understand that it is time for an upgrade, but I am still hanging onto my Jeep I bought new in 1998.

Understandable, I have a 1901 vehicle and a 1973 vehicle but they are not a practical everyday use vehicle, they to are obsolete even though they are driveable, they are not up to todays modern standards and have far less comforts and safety features and are a hazard to all the folks feeling they need to go 80 MPH on the roads.

I myself have lots of antique electronics by todays standards, heck I still have an old "Big dish" C band dish in the backyard that I need to pull down with my tractor.. Haven't been able to buy programming from C Band since 2007.. Far better picture than any of the mini dishes since C band didn't use as high of video compression as DTV or Dish..

Even have a 1977 Philco 25" TV and a 1978 Zenith 19" TV ""classics" for sure) in the basement that do actually work and have a very nice picture for SD video, but they to are very obsolete and newer TVs have much brighter pix, more vivid color, larger, less weight and use a lot less electricity.. Those are on my list to dispose of one of these days, absolutely no one wants them and they are worth nothing..

I have some VHS recorders in good working condition and even some Hi8 recorders plus Hi8 camcorder all working but really obsolete, I believe even tape manufacturers has discontinued making video tapes rendering those pretty much door stops for their original intended purposes.

Have a standalone DVD recorder, finding older slower speed recordable DVDs that are compatible with that unit is not easy, pretty much rendering it obsolete..

Have a Profession Marantz CD audio recorder, can use any computer recordable blanks, newer CD blanks are a hit or miss thing, some work some don't rendering that pretty much a doorstop.

Have a friend that bought a CD audio recorder which required special audio only CD blanks, yeah, try finding those now days.. That supply has gone away like the Dino and what is left of those are Chinese knockoffs and he burns a lot of "coasters"..

In the electronic world sometimes you just have to let go of the older equipment and move on. The standards keep changing rapidly and in DTVs case, it comes down to they are planning to move all transmissions to a much newer video compression standard in order to get all of their in house processes on one single standard.. To do that they will eventually have to stop transmitting the older standard that your old equipment uses.. Your old equipment will not be able to decode the newer video compression.

In reality, chances are you would really like the newer HD/SD sat equipment once you get past the cost to replace the old automatic sat dish..

Ours went dead with the 722 code, they told us we would have to update the equipment to get service back, the tech said we would not be able to use it in the motorhome after that so we cancelled. We are going get dish and a wally for motorhome
