DirecTV DNS issues...

DirecTV using Winegard's Trav'ler

I haven't had cable TV since the '70s and have never had satellite. But didn't want the Trav'ler to go to waste.

Bought this RV back in February and since it came with the DirecTV Trav'ler antenna I filled out and sent in the DNS paperwork. Waited a few weeks and last week activated the DTV service. BTW, never received any acknowledgement from DTV that the form had been accepted. It shows the channels I'd expect to see when I'm at my home base in Portland Oregon, but here's the problem...

I'm traveling and can't seem to find the national network feeds I was thinking I was suppose to get from LA on my dish. So I called DTV and that wasn't much help as most of the techs on a Sunday are in India, have a thick accent and have no idea what DNS is.

I did talk to someone who insisted she knew but asked for the ZIP code of where I was parked currently. I'm in Thermal California. She came back and said I can't get the DNS channels because I'm in an area that has off the air antenna service for the national stations.

OK, I'm confused. What difference does that make? Thought I was suppose to be able to receive the national networks via satellite wherever I'm parked?

Any help from you experts? Any links to an explanatory write up?

Thanks!
  • Like I said, the RV came with $2500 worth of equipment I'd like to use. And the Trav'ler is set up for DirecTV. It would cost another $800 to switch to Dish.

Yeah, I can get OTA stations...but that's not the issue. The issue is that I travel, and I want to figure out how to get those national network stations off my satellite before my next trip. That's what I thought satellite is for. So I can go anywhere and still get ABC, CBS, NBC, FOX, etc. from LA.

The difference in SD and HD is inconsequential to me. I'm happy with either res.
  • go and get dish sat service;; they speak english and yes while in thermal u will get the west cbc nbc abc cbs fox based out of the valley and la area
iam in Indio(not far from thermal)
BUT all u have to do is switch to your ota and u will get the national networks in HD;;where as on direct it will be SD
Dish is all available in Hd

I don't think you are eligible unless you are full-time. I just call when I stop and ask to change service address which they do and that gives me the locals for the area.

Yes, I am full time. That's what the DNS form was about wasn't it?

What number do you call? The techs I talked to at -5000 and -6597 have no idea.

Several of those channels give me a 721-channel not purchased error.

Going to their website and see if I can figure it out...but I just realized that there's an extra charge for DNS, and I haven't been charged that yet.

The distance network channels are from 390 to 399. Even numbers are East Coast out of New York and Odd Numbers are West Coast out of Los Angeles. Basically the locals that you receive at "home" are a spot beam that is only beamed to a limited area. The DNS channels from LA & NY are "beamed" across the whole USA. and Yes, there is a charge for DNS.
