DirecTV DVR with King Dome - How to use 2 tuners

When we had the KD. There are 2 connection from it.
One is MAIN the Second is AUX.
Run a cable from the main to #1 conn. On DVR
Run second cable from AUX to #2 on DVR.

You will need to drill a second hole in roof .

Sorry, should have been even more clear. The main KD coax is going to the front AV area. The Aux KD coax is already in use going to the bedroom receiver. So both KD outputs are already in use, but not tied like a SWM setup so the bedroom receiver can't see the DVRs recorded shows.

What has to happen is for the main output to be split to hit both tuners. I don't think a common splitter will do the job. And, being essentially transformers, they don't pass DC.

As wired currently, you can not do this. That is because the antenna does not get 18v. It gets either 13v or 18v. If you send 18v to the antenna, you get 1/2 of the channels. If you send 13v to the antenna, you get the other 1/2 of the channels. The receiver switches channels by switching voltage when needed. A multiswitch takes 2 lines from the antenna. It sends 13v on one and 18v on the other so it always has all of the channels. Then you can connect any number of receivers to it and get all of the channels.

There is only one way to do what you want, and it requires a rewiring of the MH. You want 3 tuners to run off of 2 coax outputs. You MUST run the 2 coax outputs from the antenna to a multiswitch, then run 1 coax output from the multiswitch to the rear receiver, and 2 coax outputs to the DVR.

OR, run the 2 coax outputs from the antenna to a SWM8, plug a Power Inserter (PI) into the SWM8 to power it. Then run 1 coax output from the SWM8 to each receiver. Not all receivers are compatible with SWM technology, so check that first.

My suggestion is get up on the roof. Remove the home run coax from the rear bedroom. Use a connector to attach it to a short coax cable, labeled "RB". Attach another short coax cable, labeled "ANT" to the open coax output on the antenna. Run both short coax cables through the roof into the front TV area where the other antenna output goes. You are now set up to wire up a multiswitch (or SWM8 and PI) with both antenna coax outputs, and have a coax to the rear bedroom.

Unless your DVR and receiver were designed for "whole home DVR", you can not watch programs in the rear bedroom that are recorded on the front room DVR. And if they are designed for "whole home DVR", you probably have to use the SWM technology to do that.

Thanks, that's a very concise description of what I have to do for the end result I want. I don't know if it's actually possible to re-wire the coach as the 'front' TV is actually mid-coach, and that home run makes a couple of turns and may travel through the wall. Don't know. May be more trouble than it's worth.

You're welcome. I have always found that understanding the process helps immensely in understanding the answer. A simple "You can't do that" (my first sentence above), while correct, is not sufficient.

If they ever invent a dome (or any other roof mounted antenna) with dual SWM outputs, you will be able to do what you want with your current wiring.

A thought:

Could you permanently mount a waterproof box near the King Dome and put a SWM8 and PI in it? You would have to find a way to run 120v power to the PI. You would move the 2 coax cables from the antenna to the SWM8 outputs, and get 2 short coax cables to run from the antenna to the SWM8 inputs. That would do what you want and the only NEW wire would be the 120v line to the PI in the waterproof box.

Here you go. All you have to do is run the one output to the power inserter and go from there. You can have up to eight outputs. If you have a Genie it will use up five, although only one coax. Each DVR uses two, but each only requires only one coax.

That's what I plan to do. Take one of the King Dome output coax's and transfer it to the SWM 3. The SWM will be mounted right behind the Dome. After the existing coax enters the coach it will go straight to the PI and from there to an eight way splitter. Still plan to leave one coax connected to the Dome so I can use it as an auxiliary source. Probably never will.

Like everyone else, my greatest challenge is routing the internal coax cables from the main to the bedroom and the patio locations without interfering with my batwing wiring.

You will need to take both dome outputs and connect them to the SWM8 switch inputs. You will then have a SWM1 and SWM2 output that you can connect to the existing coax cables. This would then allow you to install any number of various receivers/DVR's/Genie's in multiple locations with only one coax connection.

So much great info. I like the idea of mounting the SWM8 on the roof using both KD ouputs as inputs to the SWM8. Then plugging the existing coax(s) into 2 of the outputs. I'm assuming the other outputs would need to be terminated.
Then just mount the power inserter as a pass through to the DVR on the main TV.

Just checking, then the bedroom receiver does NOT need a PI? Just the straight coax from the roof mounted SWM8 (which is getting its' power from the DVR PI.
Would this setup enable 'whole home' viewing? Both receivers are whole home capable.
