DirecTV GenieGO

I am a DirecTV customer and have read about GenieGO as a way to watch TV recorded on our DVR while on the road.
Has anyone had experience with this? I am concerned about the quality of a WiFi signal that is required for this to work. RV parks frequently have WiFi but the signal is often weak or unreliable. I can use my phone to create a Hotspot (Verizon) but wonder if that is adequate enough?
Would a WiFi booster help give a strong enough signal?
Thanks, Skip

I don't understand why wifi would be needed to watch recorded shows.
  • If you want to use your cell as a hot spot then first be aware that video implies a lot of data that will likely exceed your base amount - ie $$$ extra.

There are various cell phone/data amplifiers/boosters available to help.

If you want to use CG WiFi then there are also various WiFi amplifiers/boosters.

Disclaimer: I have a Genie but not GenieGo. I'm sure others can provide more detail.
  • I believe that GenieGo is designed to download the program to another device like a phone, tablet, etc. So you can download the program to any supported device and watch it where ever or download it while you're on the go.

To do this you first need a DVR or Genie receiver like the HR34 or HR44. Then stream the program using WiFi from your home receiver. Can you get adequate WiFi at a CG? Maybe but a lot of bandwidth is required and there are reports of swamped CG WiFi due in part to video download. And your connection may be quickly throttled at a CG.

I just take my Genie receiver with me in the MH, watch any recorded shows on it or use it with my dish for new programs.

From DTV: To use GenieGO™, you’ll need:

An active DIRECTV account and programming package.
A wireless broadband Internet network in your home.
An available Ethernet port on your wireless router.
An HD DVR (model HR20 & later or R22) connected to your home Internet network.
A computer or a mobile device with the GenieGO App. Download the free GenieGO app on up to 5 compatible devices.
Mobile DVR Service to activate your GenieGO. It will be automatically added to your account at no charge.
