Directv HD Dish - Lightweight Recommendation?

Last month I was able to get my SD 18" single LNB to work with my HD receiver while I was camping with some help I got here! Thanks Don!

I've been looking at getting a HD Directv Dish and there is confusion amongst the ranks!

I see there are single LNB's with all three receivers (which are required for the three Directv Satellites) - but they want an SWM (powered) connection.

My neighbor gave me a slimline 3 LNB dish, but it literally was too heavy for my PVC Base I constructed. It was built like a tank.

What I'm looking for is a lightweight dish that I can setup manually (I don't need the automagic types - I'm capable of finding the bird and obtaining the signal).

Any suggestions?

Thanks!

  • This is what I use in place of the large Slimline. It has worked from Maine to Reno with minimal degradation in signal. I use this setup with a SWM 3 horn.

The modified DISH 1000.2 is slightly larger than the Phase III that I tried first and that many are still using.

If you are interested in trying this I would be happy to share any information I can.

    Not that I'm aware of.

The SWM lnb looks like a single, but it's 3 in 1. AFAIK you're stuck with the heavy dish. Just go to tv4rv.com and get a nice, sturdy tripod. And a SWM power inserter.
  • 2OldMan - I'm thinking I need a bigger boat too! LOL
Nomad - I'll check them out later this afternoon! Thanks for the tip.
Katuna - I thought there was a single LNB HD that was on a oval dish - which is what I think I'm looking for.

I've built a lightweight (PVC) base for my 18" dish that disassembles and is easy to store; However, when I put it the larger slimline on the base, it got very messy quickly and I could see a small breeze blowing it out of alignment where as my existing dish is so lightweight, it doesn't give at all.

    Thanks for the updates!

  • I have a surveyor style aluminum tripod with an aluminum mounting bracket. It is very light and very stable and very easy to level.

I now have the latest SL-3 SWM LNB that has a small round LNB that stores much easier. I replaced the bolts that hold the dish on with stainless steel carriage bolts and wing nuts and take the dish off for easier stowing. With Dishpointer AR on my iPhone I can set up in 5-10 minutes max.

There is a thread here somewhere where a guy converted the old oval dish to an HD LNB and it worked ok but you lose some strength.

I don't have a problem storing the big dish and want all the signal I can get what with Florida's clouds..
  • Just go to www.tv4rv.com and tell them what you want. Whatever your problem is, they have a solution for it. They are very good at replying to emails or speaking on the phone. Give them a try.
