DirecTV HR-24 vs HR-23

We have an HR-24 with an SL3 LNB in our rig; my bro-in-law has an HR-23 with a SWM LNB on his stix&brix. We'll be housesitting for him for a month or so.

Can I just swap the HR-24 in place of his HR-23, or will I need a SWM power inserter? To the best of either of our knowledges, there's no power inserter in his feed line.

Thanks

  • If he's using SWM there has to be a power inserter somewhere in his system. The newer SWM-only receivers don't provide the DC power for the LNB's. The PI is a small device and could be right behind his receiver or anywhere along the cable run.

If you want to swap your receiver for his you will need to go into the setup menu and select Repeat Satellite setup. The receiver will ask "are you sure you want to do this?" and will require that you press the "dash" key "-" on your remote to proceed. At the next screen there are pulldowns for antenna type and switch type. Before you remove his receiver take a look at the settings for these two. The switch type will be SWM but it is important to note which antenna type is selected. When you put your receiver in place you need to use the same settings. After making the proper selection, check signal strengths and then your receiver should be ready to use.

Also, write down the antenna type setting on your receiver so that you can reset it to the proper setting when you take it back home. The switch type at your home will be Multiswitch.
  • IF it all goes as direct planned- when you hook it up to the swim system it will recognize it and change the receivers internal settings all by itself-no need to re set up

The receiver should be able to detect an SWM switch but it will not automatically identify the type of antenna being used. Also, when going back to multiswitch (at his home location) it may not automatically change the switch or antenna type correctly.
  • Al,
You have my phone number and I can give you the info you need if you want to call.
I don't think I want to get involved here.
  • Thanks Bill and everyone. When we hooked up that HR-23 a couple of years ago, the receiver detected the SWM and antenna type immediately. I'm expecting no less from the HR-24. :)

Bill: Same phone as back when?

Sorry we missed you in Gillette, but we got some Janet hugs.

  • Yep, same phone. It just goes to Janet now instead of me but she's usually close by!
Your receiver should detect SWM automatically after you enter the Repeat Satellite Setup routine. No B-Band converter required when you connect to a SWM setup.
  • I placed the PI behind on a non SWM receiver and when ever power flickered or went off the receivers would default back to non SWM dish. Finally I put the PI in front of all the receivers and it wont reset to default.
  • Update:

Swapped the receivers, the HR-24 auto-detected the SWM and set itself up. Sweet.

Won't be quite as smooth when I switch is back in a month, but shouldn't be a problem.
