I know this has probably been addressed before but, I wasn't able to find it searching the forums.I am wanting to add satellite reception (Directv) to my camper. I am a Directv subscriber for my home so, can I not just buy another dish to setup with a tripod at the CG and use one of my receiver's from home to watch TV in the camper? I have seen all the portable dishes ($350.00-$1,200.00) that are out but, it seems in order to use those, a person has to get a pay as you go subscription or something of the sort for it to work, which cost another $30-$40 a month to be able to watch it. I am looking for something where my family and I can have reliable TV and not the crappy cable hookup that most CG's have and that's if they have it at all without paying out the wahzoo for it, especially when we're only going for 3-4 days at a time a couple times a month through the summer.I would appreciate any and all helpful input.

Yes you can. You don't even need to buy a new one. We have friends who got one at a garage sale and bring their receiver and they can watch TV. He built a nice tripod to put it on with PVC pipe .

We've done just what you are thinking about.Note that you can get a dish on a tripod on ebay for less than $100. You just have to make sure you get equipment that matches what your home equipment uses (SWM or not, etc.).

I do have the SMW setup. Is there something special I need to get that to work on the road?

It's SWM not SMW. What you need depends on what receiver you have. If it's anything other than a Genie (HR34,44) or H25 you don't need SWM anything. Any "legacy" dish will work just fine.

Dish from yard sale +$5.00. PVC stand = about $8.00. Receiver from home. Good to go.

I have fiver set up with a hd (non dvr) receiver at home. My receiver works on swm or multi switch. My home is set up with swm. I have it set up with multi switch in the fiver connected to a DTV slimline 3 hd dish. I did have toinstall an in line Bband converter for the receiver to work with multi switch dish.
I can't remember my receiver model but can look tomorrow. Pm me if you want more info.

All that you need for SD with an HR22 is a 18" round single LNB dish. If you want to use both tuners, then you need a dish with dual LNB's. No Bband converers are necessary for standard definition. If your SD locals are not on the 101 sat, then this will change what dish you need to receive your locals.

For HD, you would need either a Slimline 3 or 5 with Bband converters or a SWM 3 or 5 dish. There is also another option using a SWM8 multiswitch, but we wont go there for now.
