Disabled internet adapter

I was having trouble with my router... and incoming internet landline. I wanted to switch from the in-line cable plugged into the back of my desktop... to the wireless card that is inside my computer.

So it seemed simple to me to just click on "disable". That removed the conflict that was going in. I figured when I rebooted my computer it would just go back to the wired in internet.

I was wrong.

I have a windows 7 professional ... could you give me some step by step instructions?

Running the internet trouble shooter brings up the yellow triangle but there is nothing to click on to make it reestablish the connection.

Yes... maybe unplugging the cable from the router to the back of the desktop would be a good thing to try but if you saw where it all was... you'd understand why I'd rather not have to do that.

Before I hooked it directly to the router, i was using wifi. if that went down... All I had to do was run the trouble shooter and click on the red x on the diagram to reset and fix it. There must be a simple way to do that for a wired connection.

You don't have to disable your wireless adapter to access the Net over Ethernet. WIN OS should be set to give priority to Ethernet by default, though you can change these settings. What kind of conflict were you having?

It's complicated... Internet comes into the main building...to a modem that splits the incoming in half. One for the office there and the other line runs underground 300 feet to a "switch" in the residential building... that splits the signal into 2 lines. One of those lines runs underground 90 feet to our router... and I have four other volunteers(all in RV's) getting their wifi from my router.

So I've split my signal into five different connections. Each with it's own signin. Plus I have a 5G signin.

AT times there area 22 devices hooked onto those six signins.
Everyone has a cell phone... ipad... ipod... laptop so it's easy to have 22 devices between all of us.

Before I ran a wire to my desktop, I was getting 72 Mbs on my laptop and 130 Mbs on my desktop. Not Kbs. With the wired in internet to my desktop I'm showing 1GB.

I am saying what I see in my internet local area connection status ... not the speed test numbers.

some times the router in the main building needs to be reset and sometimes my router needs to be rebooted or reset.

I suspect that the wifi card that I have installed inside my desktop is defective. It was easier to just plug in a cable than change out that card.

I just ran a speedofme test... Download was 6.28 Mbps upload was 1.85 Mbps

    att speed test http://www.att.com/speedtest/
showed 4.79 Mbps download, 1.78 Mbps upload

The longer the cable is run... the weaker the signal. We are beyond lucky.

Are you saying you wished to switch from Wired to Wireless and it failed?

I can give you some help there. But if there is a conflict on the wireless adapter you need to fix it first.

Most non-portable computers do not come with wireless built in, There may be menu options for it,but the card is not there. A simple USB stick is handy for those.

But first, WHILE WIRED log into the router and set up your Wi-Fi, if there is not currently a passwsord or pass phrase or pre-shared key or some other form of encryption, Set that up, REMEMBER THE PHRASE And do not be afraid of phrases liek 13axxSS0223s These are the most secure type.

Now make sure Wi-Fi is engbled and the most options (G and N are best)

Now activate the wi-fi adapter on the computer (you can remain wired) and choose your note (you should also change the SSID.. mine is Snafu.Net if you do not know the signifance of that, I do not know if GOOGLE will help. but Situtation Normal..AFU).

Find your node.. Click on connect, yhou should get a requiest of the pass-key, enter it, and make sure you get an I/P address.. Once you have that.. "Cut" (unplug) the cord (Lan cable). and see if it works.. NOTE will be slower in most cases.

This laptop is wired to my router, the one to my right is Wi-Fi as is the device to my left.

I saved this... when this happens again... I'll configure the router as you instructed.
  • My Windows 7 professional was supposed to have wifi but when it arrived... sadly it was born without it. Asus shipped me a wifi card. All was well for two years. I setup a network between printers and computers. Happy camper.

A few months ago we connected our router to outside internet cable... boom ... I had 1GB speed instead of 130Mbs. I disconnected from all wireless by clicking "disconnect" on the internet access icon in the lower left side of the task bar. Instead of vertical bars showing signal strength... I had an icon of a monitor with a connection(looked like a box with a Neptune spear beside it.)

Sometime Saturday night that Neptune icon showed an exclamation point ... and my internet signal was gone. After troubleshooting i realized the problem was with the incoming signal in the office. It was 3am and I wasn't going to bother going there to reset that Century Link modem. I wanted to connect to my Verizon mifi but the incoming cable line was interfering with that... so I clicked on "disable"..... seemed so easy at the time.

When we reset the modem the next morning.... my computer did not recognize incoming internet cable line. I had wireless. It saw the signal coming from my router. I did not see a local area connection. Ran the trouble shooter... and it said the cable was unplugged or defective. I restarted my computer thinking it would just reconnect automatically. NOPE.

That's when I posted my question...

In the meantime, I asked hubby to do the twister game to get to the router and unplug the cable going to the desktop. (Yes, that's easier than getting to the back of the desktop.) Unplugging it... resetting our router.... plugging it back in.... did nothing to solve my problem.)

Then I tried one more time to run the trouble shooter...and this time it enabled the disabled internet connection. I was very happy to have that faster speed back. I just knew there had to be an easier way than me unplugging the cord from the back of my desktop.

    Thank you!

Interesting to hear your comments that has sort of followed my recent changes here as well...

What method used to work here has also changed for some reason.

To get my WIN10 Laptop to switch to WIFI mode I have to physically remove my Internet Cable coming from the router. I used to be able to do this with connection changes from the taskbar.

I do admit however that I have had a couple of wreid problems with my WIN10 Laptop with one being I lost the use of my COMM PORTS and AUDIO which I had to resort to going back to a previous RESTORE POINT to clear up things.

This may have been the reason for some of this. However all is seemingly back to normal here now with my WIN10 Latop and I still have to physcially disconnect the CAT5 cable coming from the router to get my Laptop to go into WIFI mode...

Maybe that is the way it is suppose to be. I do know when I remove my Laptop from my desktop area and walk around with it, it switches to WIFI without issue...

When others start reporting something similar to my same operating situation I start thinking the latest WIN UPGRADES may have something to do with this...

I am glad you are back to normal...

  • i fixed it... clicked on Troubleshoot problems on Network and Sharing data.. asked it to fix local area connection. This time it worked.

Sometimes I just gotta ASK for help in order to give it one more try to fix it myself.
