Disc Clean-up & Disc defrag

Running Windows 10. Computer seems to be running slow especially when getting on the Internet. Currently in Champaign IL and I had to "restart" the computer twice thinking I needed to "refresh" it's little brain. ((I use my phone as a hotspot-Verizon))
Under "settings" I found "disc-cleanup" but couldn't find "disc-defrag" as with older operating systems.

Any help is appreciated along this matter.
Thank you.
  • Nothing wrong with your computer, you're just being overwhelmed by back ground noise. And it's not the cat! BIG OL GRIN. Buddy?
Wonder if you can use some of that RV cleaning stuff to clean your HD?

Disk cleanup can help sometimes, but most likely you've have stuff running in the background. Especially since you said it mostly occurs when you're online. Add-ons, memory leaks, and other browser problems are usually what cause these kinds of problems. Try running Malwarebytes and CCleaner.

I agree with these posters except they don't mention the most likely background noise, i.e. Windows updating. It is quite common for Windows to run slowly when first powering up and getting on the Internet due to the frequency of Windows 10 updates unless you have blocked Windows updates on the link you are using. Clicking on Windows 10 Settings and then Update & Security will tell you if this is the culprit.

Unlikely that it the computer needs defragging.

Auto defrag has been part of Windows OS for quite some time now. The only time defrag may be useful in HD is if you routinely write/delete a large number/size of files on a fairly routine bases. Though more likely stored on a separate HDs? Such as editing large media files. Otherwise, defrag tends to be of limited or no benefit for HD running a modern OS.

As mentioned, CCleaner may be of more use for easily clearing out unnecessary cached files. But uncheck or whitelist specific cookies you use to log into websites if you don't want to have to do so after running CCleaner.

BTW, what % of free space do you have on your HD/SSD drive?
  • The question was,

What percentage of free space is on the "C" drive.

    Used space: 67.8 G
    Free space: 850.0 G

    There U go.

So doing the math the answer is ~92% free space.
