Dish Receiver burn-up

Question

Recently I bought a Dish DVR at CW. It took 2 calls to get the software upgrade plus ensure that I paid only the $40.00 one-time charge vs $10.00/mo forever.

Then the receiver died. Dish is sending a replacement. I wonder if the little hard drive, which gets its power only from the USB port, made it all run too hot.

When I bought my Dish vip211k several years ago, Dish recommended using an external hard drive powered by 120 vac. And not to use one powered only by the USB port. Even so, the vip211k does get pretty warm when left on for extended periods.

I use a hard drive from a laptop. I had to get a Y cable, one usb goes in the 211k and the other usb is plugged into a usb phone charger. It would not work plugged only in the 211k.

It may be the hard drive but it may also be heat.  Depending upon where you have the receiver placed, if it does not get good air circulation it will die a pretty quick death from over heating.

Mine has been running on the USB without external power for about a year with no problems.I think your problem was just luck of the draw.
