Dish, DirecTV and the a Cable-Co's have been threatening to drop (fill in the blank) channels to get more money from those channels
It is money, but you have the scenario backwards. The channels charge the satellite or cable provider and when the contract is up, the posturing starts.
The Weather Channel was so full of themselves, they wanted the government (Congress? I forget) to get involved with their squabble with DirecTV. They thought they were an essential service. DirecTV said that all of TWC's filler programming was reducing the number of viewers and I agree. With all of the other weather resources out there and the lack of focus at TWC, I never watched it. I'm on Dish, so the fight had nothing to do with my programming.
As I recall, TWC wanted to increase their price in the new contract. DirecTV wanted to reduce it since fewer people were tuning in. I don't know if they ever settled.
