DISH TV Losing DNS Capability

As some of you know, DISH does'nt provide DNS service but rather subs it out to All American Direct
.

Fol was on their website:::

All American Direct will cease operations on February 25th 2014 at 11:59 pm. At that time our services will no longer be available. All customers with time remaining on their service will receive a prorated refund by check or credit card. For further information please refer to the FAQ tab on this page.

There goes your East Coast / West Coast DNS stations.

Same here. I much prefer to have network programs in the correct time for the time zone I am currently in. And having local (to the area I am in at the time) news and weather is a big plus.

Many of us have DVRs so when a program is actually broadcast is irrelevant; we rarely ever watch shows in real time, regardless of where we are. And as for local news and weather, that's what's the internet is for, isn't it? Small town news and weather reports usually aren't worth much from an information perspective, but they can be amusing!
  • I just called DISH since I'm a customer. The agent explained that we may loose some of our local stations. They are still attempting to negotiate. She said they will be sending notices to us (as customers) with the details. We will not loose the upper channels, like SciFi, HGTV, ect.

In a way, I can understand the problem. Local stations (ABC, CBS, NBC, FOX) are free over-the-air on digital now, Looking at it from their point of view, why should they have to pay anything when they already provide their programming free to the public.

The only thing we as customers will looses, is the ability to get local stations outside our own viewing areas. I understand therir point.

Now, don't misunderstand me here. In a way, I am defending the local stations if they refuse to play ball and decide to withdraw from DISH.

Quite frankly, HOWEVER, my wife and I have been dissatisfied with Cable, Direct, and Dish for some time now. Actually, there's nothing but garbage and nothing but massive commercials. We don't pay for any premium channels, and we are not sports enthuasiests at all.

We've been watching over-the-air television a lot in the last several months and not even turning on the DISH.

So, if they are unable to reach a contract agreement, and they give us the option to cancel our contract, I think we're going to cancel DISH. We've been talking about canceling, but locked into the contract. If they give us an "out", I'm pretty sure we'll use this opportunit to take it!

And to think, I got a brand new satalite finder for Christmas and haven't even taken it out of the box yet because it's been so stinking cold to set it up!

I'm OK with local channels wherever we're camping. The Internet on our phones keeps us in-tune with the local television stations and news when we're out of our local area. We've been using this instead for some time too.

I just hope we can use this opportunithy to "get out" of the contract now.
  • OTA via AM21, DNS, "Move" or you can just hook up the local cable and swap inputs.

Plenty of options for Directv users.

I preferred calling DISH to change my Service Address in order to get the TV stations in the area where I'm camped. Plus, AAD stations were all SD.

I feel for DirecTV subscribers who really don't have the option of getting local stations as they travel via satellite (not OTA as both DISH & DirecTV have this option).

    To each his own.

  • I had AAD (All American Direct) for a while but cancelled it.

Dish brought this on themselves way back in 2006, because of improper handling of the FCC required forms needed for DNS service to be issued. They have struggled with it ever since.

Here is a link that explains it. It is rather long: DNS Explained
