Dishnet Hopper Compatability

I was told by the DN sales rep that the Hopper can't be used with any other receivers. That you have to use a Joey for additional TVs.

I would want a Hopper and an additional HD receiver or a HD DVR. That way when the Hopper fails there would still be TV. I don't care if they would tie recordings together or not.

Is there any way to do it? Thanx

  • Last time I checked. The only receiver that DN would allow you to add to an account that has a Hopper is the 211/411 series receiver if you wanted to only pay the extra $7/month additional receiver fee. While the DVR should work with the 3rd output from the antenna, you may or may not be able to add it to the same account.
You certainly can do 2 Hoppers since a standard household installation requiring separate programming for more than 3 TV's would require a second Hopper (or now a Hopper and a super Joey but that's not a stand-alone receiver.
  • We upgraded from a VIP622 and a VIP722 a month ago. We got two hoppers and one Joey. One hopper is in the RV now, and the house Hopper is set up to mirror to a second TV. The Joey is in the kitchen running the third TV.

If you go to this forum...

and message one of the DIRT tech members they can set up your upgrade. The DIRT members seem to be able to provide more help than Dish's CSRs.
  • That would be fine. They made it sound like the output from the dish was something a standard DVR would not work with. I just don't want to be in a situation when the Hopper takes a dump that all services are lost.
  • What DN was trying to explain is that you cannot hook up a standard receiver to the same wiring being used by a Hopper or Hopper/Joey combo so there is no option at all to have a Hopper plus a regular DVR or similar device (including the 211 series) all connected in a whole house manner. If you do a Hopper plus one or more Joeys you will have one output still available from the Dish antenna. This separate dedicated cable could be run to a 211 or DVR but you would have no access to any Hopper content on this box.

I'll bet you can get two Hoppers on a new account.

However, instead of talking with DISH, contact one of the DIRT (DISH Internet Response Team) members in the DISH Forum at www.satelliteguys.us.

You'll need to register in order to contact a DIRT member.
  • Two Hoppers was not an option for a new account.
  • As TechWriter said, two Hoppers would give you the redundancy you want. If you have an RV, you can have a VIP211k/z on the same account as your Hopper, but I believe you would have to purchase it separately rather than getting it as part of a contract deal.
