This is the way you pick from a list of contacts that pops up - just click on the one (or ones) you want then TAB down to the Subj: line.

On my PC I am using Thunderbird mail, but this may be of help to you. When I click on "Address Book", a window opens that has two choices...Personal Address Book and Collected Addresses. So what you're asking about would be in my Collected Addresses. I can go to that list and delete to my heart's content.

On my Mac, the email program actually has a menu item called "Previous Recipients" in addition to the Address Book. So it is on that list that I would make deletions.

Try to find a list similar to what I've described and I think that will solve your problem.

This is the right answer. Highlight the one on the list that you want to delete and hit the delete key. Cleans them out of the auto-entry list.

Thanks for all your efforts however non of the suggestions have corrected the problem..
Some of the email addresses that come up are not even in my address book.

I use Windows 7, Outlook 2007 and to remove those unwanted addresses I do this:

Click on To, mouse down to the address you want to remove in the drop down box,
Left click and hold the mouse button (the address will be overlaid in blue),
While holding the left mouse button down, hit the delete key.
The address will now be deleted and one of the addresses in the drop down box will end up in the To area, just delete it from the message To box, unless you want to email them something.
The biggest thing to remember to do is not to release the left mouse button; you must keep the address to be deleted highlighted.

The email addresses you see when you type a letter are from your address book. As mentioned earlier, left click on the To: and your address book should open with edit and delete options.

There is a setting for what you want to do. It is History or some related thing, I can't remember what. It is a feature that brings up either often used or similar topics. Sorry I can't help much but you can do what you ask, it will just take time seraching for it. Try Mail/Preferances/...

Don't type a letter in the box, just click on the "To...". A list of addresses will come up, good and bad, and you pick the one you want. You can also right click on an address in the list and delete it if you wish
