  • Yes, charging at to fast of a rate can cause a LI-Io battery to overheat and possibly explode. Put it on a BBQ - Duuu the same thing happens?? Really?

What many do not understand is a high voltage LI-Io battery pack can take out the full battery from the circuit, so a constant voltage charger like used in lead acid battery will not work well in a Li-Io application. So even a alternator can not work well, IF the charge controller for the Li-Io battery is not designed correctly. Once several of the batteries in a series pack have become full, then the input voltage to the pack must be reduced. (this applies to battery packs above 100 volts DC).

  • I had the battery on my MacBook rupture to the point where it distorted the cover on the bottom of the case (all fixed by removing the offending battery), but no "boom" type explosion. I'm guessing it overheated as the machine was running 24/7 in a fairly warm room.

I will say kudos to Apple for making something that will fail on the safe side, because batteries store a good amount of energy, and it doesn't take much (heat, puncture) to short them and cause a runaway thermal condition (i.e. boom.)
  • Don't know the legit of the posted version of them exploding but I CAN attest to the fact that batteries DO explode.

I had the battery from my screw gun sitting in the charger on a table in the dining room. We were down stairs and heard an explosion on the upper level.

The battery exploded and took out part of one wall and the ceiling, and the ceiling was a cathedral ceiling!

If anyone had been sitting near or at that table they would have been seriously injured.

I no longer charge any battery inside the house.
  • As an RC pilot, we have been aware of the dangers of Lithium in batteries every since they first came out. Currently, there are several different types of lithium batteries in the marketplace, depending on the application. As I not an expert, I cannot give any specs on any, but generally most are much safer than they used to be. The best advice is when using lithium batteries, remember that they are sensitive to excessives, especially heat, either external, or caused by overcharging.
  • Put your rv fuel tank on the same grill and see what happens.......energy.....
  • place a 'BATTERY' on top of a HOT GRILL

    yeah something is gonna happen

i called that pushing the limit of believability, way pass common sense

if it caught fire in my lap, like they did in 2006, thAT would be bad
  • The electrical engineer stated that this type of fire can be caused by the lithium ion battery overheating. I'm assuming placing the laptop on top of a electrical heated grill had nothing to do with it? :B
