SELinux in KitKat seemed to come as a surprise to pretty much everyone and now this. Google's plans aren't very well known at this point. Also, as that article points out, that commit may go away in the future as well. Or it could be the first of many and root as we know it might be a thing of the past. It's as clear as mud right now.
JMHO, SELinux was going to come sooner or later. However, with a device that has an unlockable bootloader, you can pass selinux=0 as a kernel boot option or just have a root app/shell that has an unlimited context. I do wish this commit gets removed or changed, as it breaks a lot of functionality.
I don't think root will go away, because Google would be shooting themselves in the foot in the long term. I do think it will be harder to find a device with an easily unlockable bootloader other than a Nexus one, though.
