Yes Basecamp isn't user-friendly and has a steep learning curve but it's very worthwhile.
In planning I usually study routes so much that I could probably do them without a map or GPS but it's great to have the GPS follow the preplanned route and alert me to upcoming turns etc.
I rarely ever just let a GPS plot a route all on its own. For example, a couple of years ago it insisted that going across Atlanta on surface streets was both fastest and shortest (not) and most recently it thought the best way from Washington, Texas to Cypress should involve a few miles of very narrow farm road. These things aren't perfect; the downfall is always map errors and omissions.
