Garmin nüvi® 52LM GPS Receiver

I am dumber than a rock so I need help and I don't have much money.

Garmin nüvi® 52LM GPS Receiver

Academy has this GPS for $99.98 is it a bargain or not?

I also have the main question can I insert via and stops to a route on this GPS?

We have been using Street Atlas on a laptop and we are looking for something smaller.

Thanks for your help.
  • Thanks very much for the help.

Bill I called the number you gave me and they were just as you said very nice and helpful.

The guy said with the 52 you could only one via and Matt the 55 will do 50 stops or via. The 52 is not on my list now. It looks like the 55 is the better of the two.

You folks have been a bunch of help.

    Thanks very much.

  • James,

The Garmin 52 is a discontinued number. And, deservedly so. Unless "Avoid Highway" is checked, it will route by highway with little regard for common sense. The 55 might be better and it is available at not much more cost.

It is possible in a 52 to load stops along a route, but it is not all that easy. This is the 8th Garmin I have owned if you include the marine and geocache we have. So that is not the problem.

If you have Street Atlas, and can use it effectively, get a 55 for the driver and use SA to plan the day's route. While getting stowed to travel, just sit at the dinette and load the route. You can actually load many routes in advance.

  • The price isn't bad, but is it new? Amazon has them from $114.99 to $154.99 for new units with lifetime maps. They do list one for $99.99 that is refurbished. Check / compare shipping charges.

As for what the GPS will do, call Garmin at 800-800-1020. I've used their tech help several times in the last couple of days. They answered all of my questions. They don't mind that you're asking questions about a GPS you're thinking of buying.
