Garmin Nuvi 2557LMT problems with Win7

When I travel, I store each campsite in my GPS. Last year I traveled with my 2557 and an XP laptop. No problem connecting to my 2557 and reading the updated waypoints daily. This year I have a Win7 64 bit Pro laptop. I initially found that it wouldn't recognize the GPS unless I rebooted the laptop then connected the GPS. Now I reboot 2 or 3 times and it still doesn't recognize the GPS. @#$%^&*!!

The GPS display shows the "USB screen", but the laptop doesn't show the GPS as a connected "portable device".

I emailed Garmin support and they sent me the usual boilerplate "check this, check that" reply. Nothing fixed the problem. This a.m. I downloaded the latest USB drivers from the Garmin site, but still have the problem.

Anybody else using a Garmin 2557 (or similar) with Win7?

Thanks,

  • Thanks for your input.

I have both USB3 and USB2 ports on my laptop. My Nuvi did work (sporadically) on USB3 at one time, but now doesn't work on either. Will be at my cousin's in about a week, so I'll try connecting my Nuvi to his computer.

Doesn't do much good to store waypoints but not be able to get them into my computer mapping program. :M

  • Yup, I have the same problem with a couple of them. I've heard through various BB's that some of the older (don't know what "old" is) GPS devices from Garmin are having issues with USB 3.0 and work fine if you have a USB 2.0 port to connect to. All I have is 3.0, But the funny thing is when I use Basecamp they connect, .... if I use Mapquest they don't show.

Frustrating ... for quick POI adds Mapquest is much easier to use than Basecamp.
