Garmin RV 760LMT any Usage Findings

I have been thinking about upgrading to the RV 760 and wanted to know if anyone has any real world usage findings. It looks good on the Garmin site.

I have no idea if this app can be downloaded to the RV760,but it looks pretty good for use on your android device.
  • Took my second test trip with this today. I will not keep it. I am in the KOA West Chester, PA if someone wants to see me about it. Going from 70 to 695 it tried to route me north on 695 instead of south. Then going to the KOA, it tried to route me as a truck to the KOA which would have added about an hour to the trip. Just as I suspected, this device uses truck routing. I wanted a device that would allow me on smaller roads while watching out for low clearance and such things. I like my 2595 just fine and with poi's, it works just as well for me.
  • I've had mine for about a month now, and have noticed a few quirks. I've used Garmin NUVI & ZUMO units for years, so the new software format takes a little getting used to, but it nothing major.

    My observations so far:

    1) Like Pirate states above, mine has tried routing me the wrong direction at least twice now. Once, it wanted me to turn left to get back on the interstate, which would've sent me north instead of south. I made the 'correct' turn to the right... the system recalculated, then proceeded to route me correctly in my intended direction.

Now again, I'm an old hand at using these Garmin units, and I know they occasionally 'hiccup' with a bad turn... and if you aren't paying attention, you'll be sent a few miles out of your way. It always ends up 'correcting itself', but making a bad turn in my truck or on my motorcycle is one thing... making a bad turn pulling a 38-foot 5th wheel is another. Thankfully I was paying attention, and I was not in a 'confusing' or unfamiliar area... so, 'no harm - no foul'... this time. :)

    2) I guess this one comes under the POI category... but in all fairness, I'm not sure I can blame either Garmin or NAVTEQ for it. While traveling I-77 in the mountains of NC, I needed diesel fuel for my truck. I punched up the info for fuel stations and found a Kangaroo station. No problem, I'm thinking... they have diesel & I know they usually have wide lanes for trucks. So off on the exit I go, up the hill & around the corner, and turn into the station. I can tell right off the bat, the 'truck area' is for commercial vehicles only (in other words, they won't accept my credit card for fuel... only ComChek & other commercial accounts)... which means I have to go to the other side. As I pull into this area, it becomes painfully obvious that this is NOT set up for people like me pulling big rigs. There was only 1 possible fuel island I could use at the far end, and even then it was going to be a REAL TIGHT turn to miss hitting the island. Long story short, I made it ok... but it sure would be nice if, in future updates & refinements, there could be a category for 'big-rig friendly' areas (fuel, food, etc.)

    3) Speaking of POI's, I like the way the unit displays the various icons of the fuel & food places (HESS gas, Pilot Truck Stops, KFC, Taco Bell, etc)... but I haven't figured out why it only does it sometimes. I'll see an icon for a Cracker Barrel one time... and the next all I'll see is the generic fork & knife icon. Not sure what's going on there, but that's just a matter of nit-picking.

Other than that, I've had no real issues with mine. Yeah, it's got a few quirks that I don't really care for, and the software is missing a few things that I think ought to be there. Like... how is there no pre-selected search for Camping World on an RV-based platform? And why is there no way to search for DIESEL ONLY fuel stations... especially when this thing is patterned off of the SDEZL platform?

But let's remember... it's a first-generation product. I saw similar things with the motorcycle-based ZUMO units when they first came out, and Garmin made some software updates that helped out. I'm hopeful they'll do the same with this platform also.

I'll be heading out with the unit on a 5-week trip again later this week, and we'll see how it does there.
