Garmin RV 760LMT GPS pros/cons?

I am interested in purchasing a Garmin RV 760LMT Portable GPS Navigator. Some of the recent reviews have me somewhat concerned with problem issues of the system continually locking up and in “fuel saver” mode sending you down some really bad roads. Some folks on RV.net have mentioned their good success with this unit while others, not so much. Anyone here have current user comments (good or bad) about this Garmin unit? I am ready to purchase, but hesitate thinking that maybe ALL the bugs will be worked out at some point!

  • We've had the unit for a year or so; no problems and no oddities. There's the occasional map error but that's just unavoidable.
  • For anyone looking at RV GPSs.
We purchased the Magellan Roadmate RV GPS and so far it has directed us to a dead end (with a 34' 5th wheel), in a 22 mile circle and yesterday 30 miles out of our way on a gravel road.
I have written to Magellan and the map maker and was told they would make the corrections on the next update but could not tell me when that would be.

  • I currently have the Garmin 760 and have had for over a year. I have also had the Rand McNalley (Now Good Sam) RV GPS. The two are different but I haven't had some of the problems with the Garmin that I had with the RM. I switched when the RM started freezing up after 3 years use and I couldn't get any help from them. So far I am happy with the Garmin. I use it both in the car and in the RV.
  • The only negative and what kept me from buying it is that there is no setting in the RV profile for propane. When I spoke with Garmin about this, the response was - "Oh yes, we should have included that. Perhaps on a future model." The same truck GPS from Garmin does have a profile setting for propane/hazardous gas on board. This may not be important for some, but on the East Coast there are a number of routes one cannot take with propane.
  • I have a RV 760 and am very satisfied. I have had it for a full years and a few months. Lots of built in info. Has yet to take me down a dirt road. I also Have the BC-20 back up camera that works well and displays on the GPS screen. No additional monitor needed.

Beware never trust any GPS 100%. Be sure to confirm and review overall trip with another source like Google maps or a paper map. Blindly trusting a GPS cancreate havoc and headaches!
  • Good advice djgarica.

Ktmrfs, thanks for your informative post. Your message was helpful to me. I am leaning toward this GPS. There is nothing better than hearing about firsthand experience from others.

  • we've had/used one for over a year, and probably 6-8K miles of traveling. Never ever had it lock up or send us down wrong roads.

I'm happy with it, lots of RV/camping features and built in apps. Like virtually all GPS units, Garmin gets maps and info from navteq. Navteq gets much of it's data from state data bases. State data base info and accuracy seems to vary.
As an example, in Oregon the data base will show low clearance sites that have plenty of clearance, it's the corner clearance that they publish, not the lane clearance. And in some states length limits are trailer not overall length, and can give bad info.

GPS is no substitute for common sense.

That said, the RV760 so far has had very comprehensive and accurate data on campsites, parks, rv services, things to see, rest stop locations, fuel locations, virtually all of the things we need to look up as we travel.

My only downside is the size. Good news, the display is big and very readable and customizable. Bad news, display is BIG..... need to find a place to mount it that doesn't obstruct visiability.
  • Garmin,
Make a list of questions/concerns you have and then call Garmin tech service. Their tech service is outstanding.
