You can actually find some good monitors on occasion at thrift stores. I use two I found at Goodwill as my primary monitors. Donated my former HD monitors originally purchased new, as they were not nearly as good.
Both HPs are 28" HD+ res, and almost 3x the brightness of most new HD monitors, aimed at digital design and photography. Best comparison would be to iMACs. They did have about 5,000 hrs on the bulb, but that is still 1/4 the rated manufacturers life.
Though they are higher end monitors, wouldn't have bought these new, was able to get them for about 10-12% of street price.
