GoodSam Rand Mcnally GPS

A few months ago I purchased this Good Sam Rand GPS. I am finally ready for a trip. I wanted to simply type in a from to address like I do in all my other GPS's. It took me ages to finally get something to work. I ended up having to down load the instructions which still was not to clear. Over the last couple of months I have been playing with this system and to be honest I HATE IT!!! it is the worst GPS I have ever come across. The user interface is horrid and confusing. The screen is dull and I am unable to see it when mounted in my class C. I have had to install my trusty cheap Garmin so that I can see where I'm going and for backup.

I just received an email about the RM trip planner so I tried it out. Simple enough until you want to save to the GPS where it simply stops with a phrase to enter in to an export box that does not exist? I think that all the RM products that I have tried so far are pretty much terrible. They simply do not know how to design user interfaces nor how to layout application flow. I will never ever purchase another product from that company. Very upset about these******products.

  • In general we like our RVND 7720. But it has some irritating quirks. First is that the speed limit notices are wrong frequently. RM is simply not keeping up with the accuracy of posted limits. I do take the time to send the notices different speeds, but of little avail.

A very irritating idiosyncrasy is the trip planning feature through the Good Sams web site. Its a bit complicated so I'll try to explain it best I can.

When pre planning a trip, the trip is loaded from the GS web to the GPS device. However if you are not sitting DEAD ON the GPS set starting point, the GPS will consistently re- route you to the starting point until such time as you cross that pre-planned exact point. We went through this process of trying to start a trip and never could get it to work to get us to the second point. For about a month we were on the phone intermittently with RM techs who could not explain or resolve the problem. Finally a supervisor said the only solution to this is to start a planned trip at a point several miles down the road from where you start from and not to us the starting point as the place you actually are sitting at.

I understand the nature of that issue now but wish they could find a fix for it.

The only other quirk is that some rest areas seem to be missing in some cases. I live for rest areas!

All that said I'd probably buy one again-- just takes some real getting used to.
  • I have had mine for a year and find it very easy to use. I did look over the manual first. It does not always choose the route I would take. There have been a couple of minor route variations I have made that seemed more direct. In most cases it was something to do with weight restrictions on the roads I took versus the roads the GPS wanted me to take.
  • The OP's issue with downloading the trip is unfortunately a case of not understanding how the new Tripmaker software works.

When you generate a trip online and tell it to send to GPS, it generates a code phrase of several words. That phrase is NOT entered in the online screen. It's used in the docking software. You click on the Tripmaker icon in the docking software, enter the phrase you were given online, and it retrieves the trip and downloads it to the GPS. Worked for me.

Steps are clearly spelled out in the online guide.
  • I have been using my 7720 for two years now and love it? But then I DIDN'T sleep in a Holiday Inn last night!
  • Welcome to RV.net!
Very negative first post. Have you done any searches here to find other information.
Did you do the initial big update? This is very important. Did you get the lifetime updates?
My 7710 is very easy to load addresses and destinations.
