If he likes earbuds, big two thumbs up for the Klipsch S2. They normally retail for around $70 but are often on sale for about $40. The sound was fantastic, I listened to songs and kept thinking, I never realized this instrument was in this song. They also do a decent amount of noise cancellation. The shape unlike most is oval, as is your ear canal which makes them the most comfortable ear buds I have ever used.
My soap box on headphones in general though is: don't get sucked into buying Beats or Monster or other trendy brands. They are just that, trendy but their quality generally does not match the steep price tag. Also you do not need $300 headphones to get good quality. From what I have seen, once you hit around the $40-50 range the quality goes way up and from there, there is very little noticeable quality between $50 and $300. Look for a brand that is well known for Hi Fi, not expensive cables or rap music or has a skull on the side.
