As you already know, once a GPS has calculated a route, it will keep trying to get you back onto that route if you go off on another road. There are a few ways to get the GPS to want to use the road you choose.
1. When we drove across Nebraska last year we wanted to use US30 rather then the parallel Interstate 80. The GPS kept instructing us to get back onto the Interstate. To stop this, I went to Settings - Navigation - Avoidances and added a check mark to Highways. This stopped the instructions to get on the Interstate! Of course I had to change the setting back later when I wanted to use Interstates in a routing.
2. After creating a route to your destination, intermediate waypoints can be added to get the GPS to direct you the way you want to go. This can be done at any point along the route, not just when you start out. I do this when we want to make a quick stop at a McDonalds. Go back to Where To? and find a new destination as the intermediate waypoint. When you click Go, the GPS will ask if you want to Start a New Route, or Add to Active Route. I usually do the Add. The GPS will then give you a list where you can change the sequence of destination/waypoints. Click Done and the GPS will take you to the first waypoint, then continue with directions to the next waypoint or the final destination. If necessary, you can create several waypoints along the route to force the GPS to keep you on the road you want.
