- 2oldmanExplorer III just logged onto my bank using grocery store wifi. I'll let you know if my accounts get drained.
I'm not sure how an account could be compromised without my knowing about that via text messages. Exactly HOW is an account drained? - Us_out_WestExplorer

Don't use public WiFi. Get a MiFi unit preferably from Verizon. Or get a smart phone that lets you set up your own hot spot. And you'll enjoy your MiFi when the public WiFi is so slow it's really not usable.
You can still use public WiFi for browsing and mail to keep your personal data usage down.

Best answer in this whole thread...and it was early.
We use Verizon's MiFi Jetpack and feel this is the most secure we can be on the road. - fj12ryderExplorer III

Well, if it's not rare there should lots of reports of it happening, and you should be able to point to them right off the top of your head. And no fair doing a Google search. :)2oldman wrote:
It doesn't matter whether it's happened or not. It's so freakin' rare it doesn't matter.
And you know that, how exactly ?
Clue: You don't know that at all. - Sam_SpadeExplorer

Clue: You don't know that at all. - IDoMyOwnStuntsExplorerAside from the security concerns, 9 times out of 10 my phone or tablet hotspot is much faster than the public WiFi. I use my hotspot exclusively when balancing the accounts on the road. I really don't think data useage is much of a concern when connecting to bank or bill pay websites even if you get the non-mobile versions.
Now, if you wanted to binge watch Netflix on a Chromecast in your rig, that's an entirely different animal. - 2oldmanExplorer IIIt doesn't matter whether it's happened or not. It's so freakin' rare it doesn't matter. But there's certainly a lot of fear about it. Kinda like 'I'm not buying 2 6v batteries because if one dies I'm sol'
- YvonnemzzExplorerThank you for some interesting and informative comments. I take on board everything that was posted. Especially the very informative link from rwbradley RVtechwithRob. All very sensible precautions. I do not intend to use the internet very often but obviously may have to at some point. Always better to be cautious but informed.
- fj12ryderExplorer IIIOTOH it's good that people are made aware that there are issues with internet security. How you decide to deal with it is the thing. But ignorance about it is not a good place to start.

sometimes these are the best kind of threads. OP stirs the pot with a baited message, and then never responds again :) - 2oldmanExplorer IIIf I lived my life according to what CAN happen, I'd probably never leave the house.
