I also had enough of that annoying popup that started last fall. The
GWX Control Panel program as mentioned in the first post resolves the problem without having to upgrade to Windows 10. I installed it on two of my machines last fall along with five other machines that I support and have had no problems. Some run Windows 7 and some run Windows 8.1.
GWX does more than just prevent the popup. There are options to delete the large install file that Microsoft secretly downloads in the background, it prevents future Windows 10 related updates, and it has a monitor to let you know if Microsoft tried to sneak something in.
There are some very legitimate reasons for not upgrading so it is extremely disappointing that Microsoft is attempting to force the upgrade on users. There are also some concerning issues with the licensing agreement. As an end result of Microsoft's heavy handed approach, I will only purchase or recommend Microsoft products when there is no other alternative.
Another program that I just found out about is called Never 10. I have not tried it so do your own research. It was on the Data Doctor site and is from Gibson Research, both credible sites. It appears to have less features than GWX. I like the monitor feature of GWX so I will stay with it for now. GWX is a free download and I think Never 10 is also a free download.
If Windows 10 has features you like, or it is on a new machine and you can agree with the the license, then go for it. However do not let Microsoft force an upgrade that you do not want at this time. There are good options that allow you to stay with Windows 7 or 8.x, both still supported and good operating systems.
