IE 9 upgrade?

Update. I spoke with a Geek Squad tech and he recommended getting a new system over upgrading a "computer probably on it's last legs. Today, the computer was acting up big time... MSN wouldn't respond and I had to restart the computer 3 times to get up and running again. Just had a remote tune up a month ago. So maybe they are right... I should just get a new computer.

I actually prefer a desk top for the home office. We've been thinking of a laptop or tablet for travel with or without RV.

Yes, you could replace your desktop and keep your monitor and keyboard, but here's the rub. Desktop computers are more expensive than laptops. I don't know that I can explain that unless it is because demand for desktops is lower.

The advantage of a desktop is that you can have larger disk drives and have room to add sophisticated sound and video board that power users like.

The advantage of a laptop is that it is compact and easy to move. It comes with its built-in keyboard and monitor. It also comes with built=in wireless. You could also run it without 110v power for short periods of time.

Sounds perfect for an RVer.

BTW, if you buy a laptop, keep the mouse from your desktop, or you can buy a wired mouse for 19.99. If you are using the laptop at home, you can set your old monitor up as a second monitor if you want.

Thanks for the info. Looks like my choices are rebuild the HP I have or get a new computer. I'll look into both options. Wonder if I can buy just the new computer and use my keyboard, mouse and monitor.

I've been fighting the PC battle for 30 years, and if I have learned one thing, it is that it is really not worth the effort to try and upgrade a computer that is more than 4 years old. You will spend hours and $$ for very little result. Go ahead and spend $500 on a current model.

What I have done with older systems is to replace the clunky windows OS with a Linux (Ubuntu) image. It extends the life of the system, especially if you are mainly using the browser, and not some other software like Office. (You can load Open Office on Linux). Most home users don't need all of the extra windows features that make it so popular in the corporate world.

I also recommend getting away from IE completely, especially now the Microsoft is abandoning it. Web developers hate IE because Microsoft tends to make up their own rules, rather than following the standards set by the world-wide consortium. Mozilla (Firefox) is open source and the developers are not interested in selling you a new computer every other year.

I will buy a new desktop for peanuts when my HP dies it is a 2010. My wife just got a chromebook with a nice HD screen for 300 bucks. For the net it has been flawless. I still need windows programs for work so I will stick with a desktop in the future.

hmmmm after upgrading to IE 11 here and not upgrading or buying a new lap top, I've had no problems. I did like IE9 though. IE 9 is old and outdated and I don't believe that have any updates for it.

My desktop is an older (about 2008) HP Pravilion also. It does have a pretty fast Quad processor. It came with Vista installed, and has been slow and cumbersome from day one. Doing a full upgrade to Windows was about the best idea I ever came up with. I don't do much of anything anymore except internet, e-mail, and occasionally Word or Excel. With very high speed internet cable here, I expect to use for a lot more years. The upgrade I did made it work much faster than most new machines.

Short answer 9 is the end of the line .. Vista can't go further and 9 isn't safe anymore, left in the dust so to speak . Use chrome and adapt , spend money and upgrade your old machine( see above) , Or bite the bullet and buy a new machine it will be hundreds cheaper than your last machine and faster than your old machine by a mile . Unfortunately Computers aren't buy and keep a long time things like cars In tech you need to be adaptable (switch to chrome) and willing to upgrade if you want to keep up ! 5-6 years is a lifetime in changes in the computer world.
IE is being dumped anyway .. The new browser is Edge , as soon as it's got enough to plug ins say goodby to IE !

I didn't spend much money at all for the upgrade, the the geek just charged me a bit for the work, and whatever the software cost. Not counting the memory chips, I believe it was somewhere around $100 or so. I have been using Chrome instead of IE for a browser, haven't tried Firefox in a long time. I noticed that I got an upgrade for IE up to version 11, so I am trying it, it looks OK so far. Like bob213 said, I don't think VISTA will run anything above IE9, so the solution is easy. Basically it will be just like getting a new machine, so plan on backing up all your stuff, and reinstalling any old software you might be using. And, some of your older software may not run on Win7, if so, it needs to be upgraded anyway.
