Internet access and networking

First off, I wasn't sure where to post this, so if another forum is more appropriate, please let me know.

I want to put a wireless router in my rig, have all my devices (iPad, wireless cams, Chromecast, Apple TV, etc. access it.

Then I want a simple way to tell my router (or whatever it ends up being) "Here's how to get internet." That might be my own hotspot on my phone, it might be wifi at a campground, might be the wifi at my house.

Point is, I don't want to have to reconfigure everything every time I have a new internet source. Has anyone a) attempted this and b) come up with a solution?

I know some routers allow "repeater" mode and things like that, but that's very klugey to setup and change all the time. I was hoping there was some device that already exists.

Any guidance would be much appreciated!!

  • Search the forums for one of two keywords. There are a number of threads on both:
    1) "DDWRT" this is a firmware for wireless routers that has far more flexibility than the firmware that most routers come with. If your router supports it and many do, it is free and powerful. There is an option called "universal wireless repeater", this allows you to do exactly what you are trying to do.
2)"Jefatech", this company has a Long Range Wireless Repeater kit for RV's. It is basically the same as above, but it is prepackaged for someone who is less comfortable doing it themselves. The solution ships with everything needed. You just need to mount and plug in.
In both cases, the high gain antenna is not required, especially if you are just connecting the router to a hotspot in your trailer, but it is handy for those campgrounds where you are really far away from the nearest access point. There are a few threads discussing how to mount the antenna, such as on a Batwing TV antenna (my personal favorite), telescoping flag poles, on your ladder, etc...
  • The technology forum is appropriate for this. A moderator can move it.
