I am going to break the trend so far in this thread. An external antenna for your hotspot will only give you maybe 5 or so db of gain, that will barely make a difference and you have to be really careful about cable length, cable type etc. as they can cause significant loss (sometimes more than the gain of the antenna. A Wilson Sleek will give you about 25db gain, that is a massive improvement. I have the sleek and love it. It makes a huge difference. I have regularly seen where I can go from 1 bar to 3-4 bars. There are a few things you need to know for you to have success with it though:
1) it is an amp, but it needs a signal to amplify, meaning that if you have no cell service to begin with it will not help you. It will make service better but will not provide you service in the middle of the desert where there is none.
2) the antenna MUST be at least 6 feet from the base or it will cause oscillation (like audio feedback)
3) in the case of the sleek, the hotspot or phone must sit in the cradle the whole time, and in the case of a phone, you must not put the phone/cradle up to your ear unless you want to melt your brain
Based on all the things I have tried including external antennas, directional antennas etch, for $100-200 the Sleek will be your biggest bang for your bucks by a huge margin.
