What is the make and model of the hotspot ? Very few have provisions for hooking up an external antenna.

A Yagi antenna is directional while the ones that the OP referenced are omni-directional. With A Yagi you need to point it at the tower but it produce a MUCH stronger signal even without an amplifier.
