No you don't.. I sync pix, contacts, instant messages and all the media with that, and even downloaded apps via iCloud. Its so seamless that I'm getting delinquent on syncing through iTunes. The ONLY thing I HAVE to go back to the Mac for is my encrypted password data backup. After that all i need to do is be in the LAN of iTunes and it will sync via WiFi in the background (guess i should turn that back on).
BTW- iPad, iPhone, etc. can easily be downloaded to and from an SD card with their Lightening to SD adapter.
