The fingerprint reader works surprisingly well on my 5s. I have only a bumper and not a full protective case, so I cannot comment on the fingerprint reader along with an Otterbox. To me, most of those super protective cases are way too bulky. When I did have one, I quickly cut out the screen protector film. The iPhone screen is nearly impossible to scratch in daily use, so the protector was more of an annoyance.
