Is upgrading from XP to Windows 7 worth it?

I have an older Dell desktop that I use only occasionally. However, because it has XP on it I'm starting to run into issues trying to download some applications (Dish Anywhere, for instance.) I'm considering upgrading to Windows 7 but have a few concerns. 1)Where to get an authentic version. Getting a disc off of eBay may be an issue; I've been burned there before on Microsoft products with an invalid key. 2)How long before Windows 7 is no longer supported? I don't keep up on those things and have no desire to spend decent money on an operating system that will leave me in a position similar to the current one. Thanks for any replies.
  • Defintaly NOT worth the effort. Windows 7 is excellent, but it'd be like trying to stuff a new engine in an old truck that's seen better days. Not worth the effort, and 7 may not run all that well on the old hardware.

You can get an excellent deal for a HIGH END DELL laptop unit from QVC or HSN on TV... These will come with bunches of extra software and will be on WIN 10 now... I got a HIGH END DELL INSPIRON 17R5737 with the lastest INTEL I7 Operating System... I run dual 24-inch monitors-Keyboard-mouse setup and only have a couple of cables that connect to the LAPTOP. The beauty of this I can take my LAPTOP with me on the RV trips and run a very similar setup in the RV...

They sell these with full support and on their 6 month no interest easy monthly payment plan... My last payment of just over $100 is this month...

We have purchased all of our LAPTOPS and TABLETS from these folks over the years and have had a great experience with them...

I still use my DELL M90 XP-PLUS laptop workstation because it supports the DELL DOCKING station which connects to all of my Ham Radio setups etc... This isn't on the internet much and as stated above it very slow compared to the lastest DELL LAPTOPS OS systems... I too was going to upgrade my two DELL M90's but it was cheaper to buy new ones from QVC or HSN and get the lastest version laptops... These new LAPTOPS really scream compared to my older DELL M90's... The proof for us is when you first turn them on - they almost immediately go to full operation in just seconds... CLICK CLICK CLICK haha...

It was WIN WIN for me...

We got all of our WIN7 and WIN8 units converted over to WIN10 for free so now everything we have except my two M90's are running WIN10...

  • You can buy real OEM versions of win 7
From new egg, best buy, Amazon, or FRYS electronics, not the the grocery
  • It's probably not worth it. Without knowing the specs of your XP machine, no one can say much about the upgrade. Many XP machines came with only 512MB of memory which is inadequate for running Win 7.

If it's a rarely used machine, I would look on-line for a very low cost machine running a newer OS. You should be able to find refurbished machines with WIn 7 for a decent price. Something like this: Refurbished desktop with Win 7 Home

Edit: Darn it! Downtheroad beat me to it.
  • I think you are giving some bad information.

    Windows support

Stick with XP it is still being supported. Also buy an IPad mini for other apps. About $200
  • Your best option is to download all the files off that old machine and purchase a new one. Trying to update the operating system will miss a lot of other "stuff" that has changed. In the long run it will be cheaper than trying to "fix" all the issues you will run into. And, you might even discover that a laptop will offer you more options.

  • I would look for a new machine that can be upgraded to Win 10.
Or a machine with Win 10.
