Since the early 90s, I've used the big boy's antivirus: Norton, McAfee, Kaspersky, etc. over the years at a subscription cost, of course. Then, the "Security Suites" came out trying to be everything to everybody at even higher costs. Each company, in their effort to be #1, seems to rise and fall in the rankings every year with regard to effectiveness and performance.
I grew tired of the cost of being the guinea pig and went back to the free stand-alones; antivirus and firewall with auto updates and malware, spyware, and registry cleaner. Takes a little more work on my part as some of the freeware isn't automatically updated as in their "Pro" versions. But, they are excellent programs as long as I maintain a reasonable update and scan schedule. I've had no problems or costs for years.
