I don't know of anyone knowledgeable with present day net threats that would advice not using some type of protectioin, unless you're running a type of isolated browser environment, such as a sandbox. Especially considering rootkit and keylogging malware are exceedingly difficult to detect, even by many mainstream AV protection software, could be doing its damage without any noticeable effect.
