I'm new to the Kindle......I ordered a Kindle DX for my father for Christmas. I'm tired of getting him Lowes gift cards for for Christmas and birthdays. He doesn't have internet and probably never will get it. I know he will buy books from Amazon, but he would use the free library more. My question is if I order Amazon Prime can he use it too. I suppose he can take advantage of the free library books and I can take advantage of the two day shipping and streaming movies, etc. I want him to use the Kindle freely without depending on my help because he won't ask, just knowing my father and living 5 minutes away,LOL. So If he knew he had to pay for library books he would get them at the local library and that would defeat the whole purpose of the Kindle.

Maybe I'm missing something but if "he doesn't have internet and probably never will get it", what use can he get from the Kindle? You want him to use it freely without depending on you, but if he can't access Amazon or other sources how will that happen?I assume that you got him the DX because of the larger size. There are lots of Kindle books at our local library and I assume that his will also have a selection. FWIW I also wanted a DX but the price difference between the regular Kindle and the DX was just too much for me. It's a nice unit IMO.

Thanks for the heads up on the 3G, I didn't realize that the DX has that. I think the DX will be phased out pretty soon, and the lower prices make me think that it won't be too long. However it's on my list as a Christmas present. :) The price makes a lot more sense than when it was so much higher. And it also has Wi-Fi so that works for me.

On second look it doesn't appear to have WiFi. Bummer.

The DX has been around nearly as long as the original Kindle. Thanks to this thread I believe I'm getting a DX for Christmas. :B :B :B

Yeah, you're right. I was thinking about All-New Kindle Fire HDX 8.9" Tablet. It does have DX in its name. I've been researching these things for awhile and hadn't heard of the DX. As I said, there is more than one flavor of Kindle.

I bought a Kindle Keyboard, also with free 3G for life, for my mom. I keep it supplied with books for her by browsing the Kindle top 100 free ebooks lists a few times a week and send books to her Kindle. She likes family sagas and westerns, so easy to keep her Kindle topped off. Maybe you could so something similar for your Dad and just have books show up auto-magically for him?
