I want her to check out a Paperwhite, mainly for reduced eyestrain. Not sure if a local box store carries them or if we would have to order one from Amazon.
We still plan on getting the new Kindle Fire HDX 8.9" 64GB with the 4g LTE. I now understand that this is mainly a tablet first where as the Kindle Paperwhite's are preferred for 'reading a book'. Have I got this right?

Yes, they really are designed to serve two different purposes. I love my iPad tablet for what it's deigned for, but when I want to do serious reading, I use my Kindle paperwhite. I have the Kindle reader software on the tablet, but it's just not the same for long term reading.
Either one looks OK for reading at the store, but after hours of reading . . . the nonglare screen on the Kindle paperwhite wins hands down.
