Laptop or Chrome Book?

Wifes desktop died, want to replace with laptop. Should I go with a chrome book? Sounds good but I guess everything is out in the cloud, not on a hard drive, right?

  • A Chromebook or Chromebox is the way to go if you don't want to deal with Windows security problems (virus, malware etc).

  • Now may be a good time to evaluate what she uses one for? Does she use Windows based programs? Does she actually need to store "stuff" on a hard drive, locally? There are a lot of good choices out there other than a traditional laptop. As Ranger said, the Surface Pro 3 from Microsoft is a good alternative to a laptop and allows the use of all Windows based applications. I personally like my IPad for most things that I need to do, but revert back to the laptop for spreadsheet work or apps that are not IPad compatible/friendly such as my tax program. I like a large screen, full sized keyboard, and the mouse for some applications. You wife may have this same desire.

Everything is not out in the cloud, we have all files stored on the solid state hard drive in the Chrome Book. We went with a Chrome Book because we just didn't need all the MS programs anymore, 99% of our use is on the internet. We were already using Chrome for a browser so we just had to enter our password and everything was there. The only work around was out old printer. There are also Office type apps that will read and modify MS documents. It's also fast because you don't have a the MS bloated system hogging all the hard drive space with stuff you don't need.

All we use anymore is a Galaxy 7" tablet and our Chrome Book and Drop Box to transfer files between the two.

  • Notebook. The chrome is proprietary to google. Get her a nice surface pro 3. Just bought one and love it.
