Local channels via satellite

I was just told by a DISH support person via chat that with the Tailgater and their RV pay as you go programming that due to new federal regulations, local channels will only be available via off-air antennas beyond 150 miles from your home area. You will not longer be able to contact Dish and change your service area to your current location. Is this FACT or FICTION?
  • Did they say when this happened? We were seeing Phoenix AZ "local" channels up until end of January when we left to come home to Oregon. If that's true, it'll make LOTS of us angry!
  • No, I wasn't quick enough to think to ask them when the regs changed. I was just too angry.
  • Sounds like fiction. Just changed ours last week with no issues. There are a couple of active threads obj this subject over on the Escapees forum

When I get a rep that doesn't seem to know what to do (and they do come up with weird excuses) I just say thank you and call back again.
  • this has previously been discussed here. evidently the company providing the distant local channels what ever they are called will/can no longer provide them after a certain date.
those are the ones that Dish had to go with a 3rd party to provide them after a suit of some kind where they were giving distant locals inappropriately.

Actually, the 3rd party one was over with last summer some time. They no longer had a contract with the company (America something). Before we left in Sept. we went in and talked to them about it. They said that no matter where we went, just put in the zip code and/or call (according to what you have) and we could watch locals for that area. We had absolutely NO problem.

And I agree with another......if you EVER get a clerk answering the phone or a tech somewhere that has a suspicious answer for you.....or one you don't want (LOL).....call back. Over my years of working in offices, I have found many times that young clerks will just give an answer -- right OR wrong. (yeah, and they were usually called on carpet -- however it was too late to help THAT customer)
  • Log in to your account, go to live chat and ask them to change your service address. You just need to tell them your address. I did it last week and have the locals on right now.
  • That information was not correct as of this morning, but stuff changes. Using www.dish.com/chat and selecting the Customer Service link should get you to the right people. Prepare a basic dialog ahead of time that states you are in an RV, you have moved to a new location and you need to have your Service Address changed (not your billing address). Provide the exact address for your location including a zip code and if it's an RV park something like site 123C to ensure no one else has that number. Be sure that your antenna is already up, pointed and you are watching TV as the signal will be sent immediately upon the clerk doing the paperwork and it is sent only once. If you can't receive it, nothing will happen.
  • I call 1 800 333 dish and select tech support on menu. When I get a tech, tell them I want to change service address. Give them exact address with zip code and tell them to update automatically. Usually have to wait half hour or so. But it happens. Just did it on Saturday and will do it a couple more times before we finally get home. Works great for me.
  • Thanks for the feedback. Appears that the process is to call DISH and ask that they change your service address (not billing address) to your current location (exact address). This is really good info as my wife and I prepare to begin our full-timing adventures in three short months. Thanks again.
  • If you have an internet option available to you then I would suggest that you try the Chat function. Get the script setup and have it all entered before you begin so they are somewhat overwhelmed that you have already provided the necessary information. Makes them think it must be OK (which it is), you have done this before!
