Local Channels

We use the Dish Tailgater. Is it possible to get our home base local channels when traveling well out of the area. Last time out a RV neighbor said he was able to...got interrupted during conversation and I wasn't able to ask how?
  • Amanda and Dutch are correct. Once you're outside of your home local spotbeam, you won't get local programming via a dish antenna. Your home receiver, if there is one, will continue to receive the local programs until you call or contact Dish and have your locals changed.

If you change your "locals", say you're in San Antonio, and your home receiver is in Seattle. Then you will get San Antonio locals on your RV dish, and your Seattle receiver will not get any local programs until you call Dish back and change your service address back to Seattle.

You can use Dish Anywhere to "stream" programs from Dish to your RV "IF" you can afford a service plan with enough data. Streaming r eally eats up data.

One other option is to have Dish Slingbox on your home receiver and then you can pull off programs from your home receiver and stream that programming via wifi. But it takes a pretty fast connection at your home, and at your RV.

By "home base", I'm guessing you mean you want to receive your Idaho locals when you're in some place well away from there, like Florida, Arizona, etc. If that's the case, it's not going to happen on Dish, or Direct for that matter. The local channels are spot beamed, meaning they're aimed at relatively small geographical areas, usually only a few hundred miles around. Your RV neighbor may have been within the footprint of their own locals spot beam. When we're in Pennsylvania for instance, near Harrisburg, we can still get our upstate NY cottage locals from the Albany market, but only in SD on the western arc birds. We're out of range for the Albany HD spot beam signals on the eastern arc.

I disagree with the others. You will NOT get your HOME BASE locals......you WILL get ABC, NBC, etc....but not your local channel ABC, NBC, etc. (let's say the same weatherman). So you will NOT know how the weather is in your home town, etc. As far as getting to watch your favorite sitcom on ABC, yes, calling and changing the zip code works. Be aware, different regions of the DishNetwork may change what time your favorite show will come on. :)

Just to inform...we've had Tailgater for over a year....and traveled from Arizona, to central Oregon, to Salem Oregon......changing the zip code.... I LOVE LOVE LOVE the tailgater....:)
  • is it that easy...wow. so give them the zip code for the RV park I am at but leave the billing address the same?
  • We do it every time we are out of our local spot beam. Call Dish, tell them you are in your RV and want to change your service address (not your billing address). They will ask for the local address and reprogram you to the nearest major city with local network channels. About a 5 minute phone call and another few minutes for the change to take place and the new channels to show up on your program guide.

Sometimes a zip code is all the want. But sometimes they want an actual street address. If you do not know the actual address, just tell them it is 100 "nearest local highway", city, state.
