Looking For Mobile Weather Station w/Anemometer

I want to add a simple weather station to our MH to monitor outdoor temp, humidity, wind speed and direction. wireless preferred over running cables. how well does the anemometer hold up at highway speeds? I'm planning on a "permanent" installation as opposed to a 'put it up while parked' install. any information and recommendations on your experience, installation, specific mfgs and models would be appreciated.
  • As a retired meteorologist, I've always wanted to have my eye on the weather, especially when camping out in the wide open spaces. For years I had a Maximum anemometer and directional vane mounted on the roof of our home. When we moved to a condo and I was not allowed to install it, I decided to use on our RV. It was a wired system so I had to run a cable from the interior read-out dial to the roof where it terminated in a waterproof connector. The anemometer and directional vane were mounted on a 4-5' mast clamped to the roof rail near the ladder. For travel I could easily dismount the instruments and flip the mast down and clamp it parallel to the rail.

  • I have been maintaining two stations on the Weatherbug and Wunderground networks almost since their inception, as well as having spent years as a NWS observer under the COOP program.

You very much get what you pay for with stations....or what you don't pay for. I would not want to put even one of the top level Davis Instrument packages into a mobile application even though they are great units for the price. Any of the cheaper ones like Accurite are basically just that..cheap....not all total junk but expecting them to hold up mounted on a vehicle is asking for a lot.

You could look into "Columbia Weather Systems", they have mobile specific stuff but get ready for sticker shock.
  • You did not specify a budget, but 'simple weather station' implies consumer grade rather than pro. Most consumer quality weather station packages will include a rain gauge and probably will not hold up very well on the outside of a MH.

An Indoor/Outdoor/humidity unit will give you a wireless console for all except wind. You can usually find these at HomeDepot/Lowes/WalMart, etc. The Acurite or Ambient models usually are in the $10-100 range. But you might have a problem mounting the outside unit permanently. It is about 1/2 the size of a smart phone, so I had mine on a loop of fishing line and and just hung out when we setup.

For an anemometer, the best solution will be a pole mounted unit that will reach above the roof your camper once you setup camp.

Another option is to build your own - the RaspberryPi has a large number of sensors and 'how to' guides on homemade weather stations.

You can also search WXForum.net. There is a large section about the different weather stations and measuring hardware manufacturers.
