MagicJack To Pass 911 Access Charges to Users

Magic Jack recently sent the following email, basically informing users that they will begin collecting local 911/911E access service fees, which could double the cost of their annual service in some jurisdictions:

    Dear customer:

This is not a bill, but a choice for you as described below. If you decide you will not pay, you do not have to take any action.

Due to recent changes, magicJack will start to charge for 911 services for 911 capability. If you decide to continue to receive certain limited 911 calling privileges as described in our TOS, you will need to go to my.magicjack.com and fill out the necessary forms and give new debit/credit card information.

magicJack will not profit by collecting these pass through charges for the 911 authorities.

The charges will be billed annually by email and may cost anywhere from $6.00 to over $60.00 a year. On average throughout the country it will cost about $12.00 a year.

magicJack will provide limited exceptions for hardship cases for people who made a 911 call before July 1, 2013 and will post notification or email these certain customers later concerning the eligibility.

These unfortunate changes were made necessary because certain emergency 911 Districts in certain jurisdictions requested we attempt to bill on their behalf and benefit.

    Dan

This fee is optional, and only if you want to use "911" for direct access to local emergency services. However, you can generally find the local "direct" phone number online, typically called the Emergency Communications Center for your city or county, and program that into your MagicJack contacts without paying additional fees.

  • I think I'd be willing to pay a dollar to five a month for emergency service.
  • I think it also depends whether you're using MagicJack as a traditional landline, at a fixed address, or as a portable device. As I recall with MagicJack, you need to set a street address for 911 service? So if traveling, you must constantly re-set the 911 location for it to work anyway.

I'm not sure how MagicJack is going to handle this as 911 fees vary by jurisdiction? Or are they restricting 911 access to just one address?

It took me under a minute to find my direct phone no. to my County's Emergency Communications Center, so not that difficult to locate or program a contact. And with no 911 fees. Can always use my mobile 911 if needed.
  • $.17 per day seems very reasonable to me for the 911 service.
  • What is the big deal? Per the OP they can opt out and will not have 911 capability.
  • i'm thinking people you go the voip route do it to save money

i use a cellphone i know the 911 cost is in there some where

$60 a year is a big addon for these people buying a $20 device for free voip service

If the cost of 911 service was defrayed only among those who call 911 instead of everyone with a phone, the cost per call would be thousands of dollars. That would mean no one would use it, which really defeats the purpose of having 911 service.
  • I think that's what some mobile providers are doing as I don't pay any monthly service charge to use Verizon on PagePlusCellular.

  • Sounds reasonable. Someone has to pay to operate the centers. Its still the best deal going.
