This is what I use. Zero problems.

I also pay attention to where I click, and don't visit high-risk sites such as internet gambling and porn sites. I'm also very careful what I download from any site.

If you want to completely remove any program, I mean every last trace of it, try Revo-Uninstaller. It completely yanked every last trace of Kaspersky down to the root level off my machine first time.
I use Bitdefender, Malwarebytes, Ccleaner, and Process Explorer. Malwarebytes does catch a few things here and there like pups and pop ups. But Bitdefender leaves precious little for it to do.

For years I have been using these two on our own machines and the ones I support for out Yacht Club.

I also use CCleaner (free) and System Mechanic (pay version)

The System Mechanic does a very good job of keeping the machines from running slower over time.

I clicked on a Disney site, and got a Trojan Horse warning. I checked Windows Defender, and it said my computer was clean. I ran Malware Bytes and it found 5 threats. You can make your own conclusions from that.

Windows Defender is mostly checking for viruses. MalwareBytes is checking for mostly malware, spyware, adware, and not so much for viruses. So consequently it's only reasonable that MalwareBytes will find more positives than Windows Defender.

The paid version of MalwareBytes includes real-time scanning. If you are using another real-time AV, than its not necessary, and could actually reduce the effectiveness of your AV protection. Windows will generally detect this conflict, and suggest disabling one. However, I'd keep the free version of MalwareBytes as it's effective as a secondary on-demand scanner, and will not interfere with your other AV.

I'm using Windows Defender and Tunnel Bear VPN. Do occasional scans with Malwrebytes Free. So far have had zero problems with any sort of Maleware or virus. Of course, I'm also careful about what I click on on the Internet.
