Mapping app that lets you avoid freeways?

I was jealous of a motorcyle-riding friend's apple maps program, that has this as an option. Google maps is obsessed with freeways and hates to admit that minor roads even exist :).

Anybody here know of an android or PC program that will help me plan routes without freeways?

In my experience, they ALL do.....you just have to figure out that for some strange unknown reason they all seem to refer to freeways/interstates/expressways as "HIGHWAYS".
If you set it to avoid "highways" you probably will get what you want.
One of the popular ones won't let you do that on a trip over 750 miles or so though.

Well, That isn't Street Atlas, I am currently developing a 1500 mile route that will take four days, six fuel stops and five museums and other attractions.
Yes, you need to look at Street Atlas.
As a side not, I once told SA to Avoid "Limitied Access" and "Toll Roads". It did, but to Avoid a 1.50$ toll, it routed us through BFE (someplace remote). So, when I don't want them, I just turn the route speed of those down to less than reasonable. That works.

  • I have been using Street Atlas since 2004. It has MANY features and options so you can plan and then use your plan for a trip - with multiple stops, 'via' locations, roads to use or avoid, and so much more. I plan at home and then just move the computer (laptop portable) into the Moho. Connect the GPS & power and you are ready to travel. Voice commands can be on or off and the Voice recognition to give commands to the program is excellent. And the location feature is great while on the road (i.e find the nearest hospital or Cracker Barrel or Flying 'J'!)AND there are many addins from others - like all of the known hot springs in the US, military campgrounds, Federal and State Parks, Corps of Eng parks, Cummins Dealers / repair, etc, etc, etc) Of all the programs that I have read about, it is one of the best. • Windows 10 comes with a mapping program that will allow you to avoid highways, etc. As a test, I put in a start in NJ and an end in Jackson, WY. I selected to avoid highways, toll roads, unpaved roads and tunnels. The resulting turn by turn directions included exactly zero interstate highways.

The one downside to this program that I have found so far is that there is no way to plan a route with intermediate stops. You can only enter a start and end point for the trip.

When you select 'Get Directions' on MAPQUEST there is a 'options' link.

Click on it and all kinds of mapping options,,,,,,,,avoid highways, toll roads etc.

Mapquest does have 'mobile app'. Don't know how it is set up as I don't use any apps

Yes! I tried out the app on a route. Luckily 'avoid highways' seems to mean 'use highways, avoid freeways', which is exactly what I wanted. Thank you!

Microsoft Streets and Trips has a feature called "preferred roads" and let me check. Yup

Route: Route Options: Segments: Preferred Roads: Preferred road types.

Lay your start and end points first then follow the path above you can "Turn down" interstates and turn up other roads (or however you want to do it).
