From the various articles I've read (including the one linked to in the first post of this thread) there is no mention of Win 10 being free for a year with a requirement to purchase it or subscribe in order to keep it. The articles state that WITHIN THE FIRST YEAR OF RELEASE the OS will be a free upgrade. That means as long as you upgrade within the first year there is no cost, period. If you wait and the year expires, then you will need to buy the OS.
The whole point is that MS wants to entice those running Win 7 or Win 8 to move to Win 10.
I've been playing with the Win 10 Preview since it was released and I personally haven't seen anything in it that would compel me to upgrade any of my computers running Win 7 or Win 8 to Win 10. I would only go with Win 10 when building or buying a new system.
