Had the same problem tired all of those gadgets with fans IMHO they do nothing but take up yet another one of your limited usb ports.
Interestingly I found at Walmart of all places, a REAL slick metal grated 2 piece on hinges,tray made for computers. The back has several positions to raise and lower the back end of the tray. Has a lip on the front to prevent it from slipping too.
"Cooled my laptop down immediately" without any fans. AND the elevation of the back also makes it much easier to view the screen and helps with not having to bend your neck down and brings it up to any eye level you need while computing! Light weight, folds flat so you can easily take it with you. Has like 20 different angle settings!
They have this great product hidden in the office supply section packaged in a box. Hard to find but I give it 10 thumbs up.
