  • When I got new computer for Xmas I was very difficult to find one running Win-7. After I located one at reasonable price, I used Belkin Easy Transfer Cable to move app from XP computer.

I only had difficulty with two apps. Microsoft Money 2004 and Solitaire. I found MS Money Plus which, after some adjustments, works exactly like my old Money app.

My Solitaire was more difficult, some files transferred but data was something else. I had to more file by file. I had 50000 games played and was little over 50% wining percentage, so I was very determined not to lose my stats. Finally got eveything working smoothly.
  • Download the Microsoft Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor and when you run it, it will tell you what applications may be at risk of being a problem if you upgrade. Here is the link:

you can't move an installed program...you'll need to re-install it. make sure the XP programs will work on 7 or 8. you may need new drivers or a new version. most of my XP stuff reinstalled and works with no problem on Win7 Pro.
  • Recently built a new system (about 2 months ago) with windows 7 as I am planning on retiring my XP system. All of my software applications I ran on XP are running fine on Windows 7 so far, no surprises as of yet. This is not to say all application are compatible.

I think you will like Windows 7 if you go that way.

I took my old XP system and installed Ubuntu onto it as the operating system, working great.

    Good luck
  • If you have any Adobe products you might want to check their hardware upgrade instructions.
I have Lightroom and Adobe requires that the software be un-installed and registered with them as uninstalled before they let you install it on another computer.
  • That could be a problem... Some programs that work on XP will not work on Win 7/8 with out upgrades. Even Microsoft programs may require the purchase of a new version to operate. You may want to contact the authors of the existing software to see what they say and/or download a copy of a program from Microsoft that will advise you as to what programs you have that will need attention.
