My Laptop Survived Gravity

Yesterday, I was unloading items from my vehicle when my neighbor, who uses a wheelchair, offered to help. He insisted on helping although I had said I would be OK. So, against my better judgment I let him put my computer (Toshiba laptop in a soft case)on his lap. He got halfway to my door when the computer slipped off his lap and fell a few feet onto hard cement. I immediately thought, that must have caused some damage; at least the hard drive is probably toast. I wasn't too mad at him, but more at myself for letting someone else handle my computer. Anyway, I immediately removed it from its case and tried it out. There appears to be no damage at this time. I was quite surprised because, even though it was encased, it took such a hard fall ,.

That reminds me of a similar incident, years ago, with another Toshiba laptop I owned, which took a fall from a coffee table while I was using it. That time, the screen broke and I thought , for sure, the same fate for the hard drive. However, the hard drive survived and I had it removed and installed in an enclosure to use as an external HDD, which I still use to this day.

So its apparent to me that mechanical hard drives are less sensitive than I thought. I know I've read about newer HDD's that protect themselves from damage by keeping certain components within from touching when a fall occurs, but am of the opinion that not all laptops offer similar protection; perhaps only the pricier machines. At any rate, all's well that ends well! From now on, nobody but me touches my computer! ;)
