Networking / port forwarding etc,...

I need to add a switch to my router. I'm out of ports for wired devices and I have to add another wired device so I ordered a 8 port, gigabit, un-managed switch. Will I be able to control my port forwarding on the devices plugged into the switch by logging into the router? I've never had a switch before and some of my devices have to be set up for port forwarding with a static IP addresses.

Will my 4 port router show the stuff that's plugged into the switch so I can port forward to the devices plugged into the switch?

  • Thanks all! I have it up and running. Next step is give Comcast back their modem/router and replace it with my owned stuff. They went up to 198 bucks a month on me for internet, phone and cable so I bought a firestick, a OBiTalk box and a router. The OBItalk works with my Google number that's free other than the 40 bucks I paid for the box. Comcast was 10 for a phone line per month. Google is free. My bill should go down to about 60 for internet.

I use a switch (A vintage D-Link) and yes.. all it does is switch. the router controls all the things the router controls IT assigns IP addresses. It blocks or forwards.. It's kind of like adding half a dozen ports to the Router (You need one router port for the switch and one switch port for the router so you only gain six)

But the router still does it all. the only difference is that the total bandwidth to the devices on the switch is limited by the max bandwidth of the router's LAN port So if it's a Gigibit. and two devices are sucking data, they may only get half a gig each.
  • Yes anything that goes through the switch to the router will show on the router. So yes your port forwarding will still work on items plugged into the switch as well as on items plugged straight into the router.
